1.表示在一些相同的事物中间，可以用between.比如between ourselves.又如你举例的第一个句子.between the trees.
2.表示三者或三者之间,among更强调一种存在情况，某种事物是存在于这三者之间的，，而between强调的是一种存在状态,以及相互关系某种事物存在于这三者之间.

当它强调三者中二个事物之间比较时,可以用between, 这是它的特殊用法.
比如: You can't find the difference beween John, Mike and Shane.
你在约翰,迈克和申之间找不到不同.(当然人不可能都一样，打个比方)
这句话说的就是
between John and Mike, you can't find the difference/
between Mike and Shane, you can't find the difference/
between John and Shane, you can't find the difference.
强调三个人二个之间的比较.
